Huntsville Hospital's cancer program earns certification
Huntsville Hospital’s cancer program has been accredited through 2023 by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC).
To earn voluntary accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Huntsville Hospital is the region's only CoC-accredited cancer center and has been continuously certified since June 1991 -- almost 30 years.
As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Huntsville Hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.
Huntsville Hospital Clinic for Breast Care surgeon Caroline Schreeder, MD, is current chair of the hospital's Cancer Committee. Radiation oncologist Jim McCarty, MD, and hematologist-oncologist Rachel Kruspe, MD, are the physician liaisons to the committee. Karen Adams, RN, is the cancer program director.
