This four-session course is highly recommended for first-time parents. Experienced nurses discuss important topics such as health and safety, growth and development, coping with parenthood, and more.
Classes meet Tuesdays at the Dowdle Center in Huntsville or Wednesdays at the Madison Wellness Center. A two-week Saturday course is also available at the Dowdle Center. This course combines classes for two four-hour sessions.

Parenting Session #1 - Baby Care Basics and Feeding Alternatives
Covers basic baby care including bathing, diapering, holding and swaddling, as well as breast and bottle feeding
Parenting Session #2 - Car Seat Safety and CPR
Covers car-seat safety, choosing and using the correct car seat, installation tips, baby-proofing your home, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and infant choking. A take-home CPR doll and instructional video kit is provided for further education and training (a $35 value). *Note - CPR kits were updated in May 2011 to reflect the new CPR guidelines.
Parenting Session #3 - Health Issues and Crying and Sleeping
Covers when to call the doctor, how to handle common pediatrician visits, how to soothe a crying baby, bedtime tips, information on preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other health issues
Parenting Session #4 - Growth and Development and Emotional Side of Parenting
Covers simple techniques you can use to stimulate the growth and development of your baby and build your baby’s “brainpower.” This class also addresses lifestyle changes and the emotional impact on the parents.
